What is the Difference Between Plenum, Riser, and PVC Cat6 Ethernet Cables?

When it comes to Cat6 cables, there are three primary types: plenum, riser, and PVC. Each has its own unique properties, but the most significant difference between them is the type of shielding they have. Plenum cables are shielded with a fire-retardant jacket, while riser and PVC cables are not shielded. The main benefit of using a shielded cable is that it can protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI).

The cost difference between shielded and unshielded Cat6a cables is negligible. So most people choose to use the shielded option for peace of mind. The distance that a cable can transmit data is also affected by shielding; unshielded cables can typically support shorter distances than shielded cables. However, the difference is not significant enough to make a major impact on most projects.

Cat6 Plenum Cable

Cat6 Cable 1000ft Plenum comes with a CMP-rated jacket of the highest quality. When it comes to the quality of the outer jacket, a CMP jacket has the highest rating. CMP stands for Communications Multipurpose Cable, and these cables are best used in plenum spaces inside buildings, in case you didn’t know. These CMP-rated Cat6 Plenum Cables limit fire advancement and produce no toxicity such as hazardous gases or smoke, which is important in plenum spaces where fires are more likely to occur.

Bulk Cat6 Plenum Cable can also be used in the riser/vertical spaces of buildings, as well as for a run in the outside spaces. However, due to safety issues, you cannot utilize riser or PVC cables in plenum spaces.

The data speed of the Cat6 Plenum cable is a whopping 10 Gbps across lengths of up to 50 meters (164 feet). For lengths of up to 100 meters (328 feet), the speed drops to 1 Gbps. Despite this, the maximum and minimum data transfer speeds are ten times quicker than the previous Cat5e cable. Because this cable has a bandwidth capability of up to 550 MHz, you’ll get the best possible signal quality and connectivity.

Plenum 6th generation ethernet cable has an interior structure made up of 8 conductors twisted together in four pairs. To prevent EMI and crosstalk, the insulator separates the four twisted pairs. You can use copper or copper-clad aluminum as conductors. The cable is 23 AWG and has a UV-resistant jacket.

Cat6 Riser Cable

The Cat6 Riser Cable has a CMR-rated outer jacket and is best used in building risers or vertical spaces. These areas, too, enable return airflows and pose a fire hazard. The CMR-rated outer jacket of riser cables prevents fire advancement while emitting very little toxicity in the form of gases or smoke. Although you can use this cable outdoors, you cannot use a PVC cable as a riser alternative due to safety concerns.

As a 6th generation cable, Cat6 Riser Cable allows maximum data transfer rates of 10 Gbps but only up to a length of 50 meters (164 feet). The minimum data transfer rate enabled by the 6th generation riser cable is 1 Gbps, but only up to 100 meters (328 ft) in length. The cable has a maximum bandwidth capacity of 550 MHz.

The riser Cat6 Cable 1000ft’s inner construction is similar to that of its plenum equivalent, with eight conductors bundled together in four twisted pairs. To prevent EMI and crosstalk, the insulator separates the four twisted pairs. Pure copper or copper-clad aluminum can be used as conductors. The jacket is 23 AWG and the cable is 23 AWG.

Cat6 PVC Cable

Cat6 PVC Cable is a 6th generation ethernet cable with a PVC coating that is suitable for outdoor use. Because you’ll be installing this cable in a hostile outdoor setting, the jacket is sunlight, UV, and chemical resistant. This cable is less expensive when compared to Cat6 plenum and Cat6 riser cables.

The only thing that distinguishes PVC cable from riser and plenum is the outer jacket. There is no effect on data transfer rates or bandwidth capacity. It can transport data at a maximum rate of 10 Gbps across a distance of 50 meters (164 ft). The minimum data transfer rate enabled by the 6th generation riser cable is 1 Gbps, but only up to 100 meters (328 ft) in length. The cable has a maximum bandwidth capacity of 550 MHz.

Applications

Each of the three Cat6 Cable 1000ft have been intended to help rapid applications, for example, IEEE 802.12:100 Base-VG, ATM PMD 155 Mbps IEEE 802.3 Fast Ethernet:10 Base-T, 100 Base-T4, ANSI X3T9.5 TP-PMD (FDDI), and 100 Base-X IEEE 802.5:4/16 Mbps Token Ring.

While Cat6 plenum and Cat6 riser cables are available in both pure copper and copper-clad aluminum conductors.  PVC cable is only available in CCA conductors. Cat6 cable with pure copper conductors is substantially more expensive than Cat6 cable with CCA conductors. All three varieties use 23 AWG wires and often meet or exceed FCC, CSE, CE, ISO/IES, and RoHS requirements. This cable is ideal for residential, commercial, and gaming applications.
